How to clean a oil spill
Cleaning an oil spill safely depends on the size of the spill and where it has occurred. Acting quickly helps prevent slips, environmental contamination, and costly clean-up.
1. Make the Area Safe
- Stop the source of the leak if it is safe to do so.
- Keep people away from the spill.
- Remove any ignition sources if the oil is flammable.
- Wear appropriate PPE, such as nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
2. Contain the Spill
Prevent the oil from spreading by placing:
- Absorbent socks or booms around the spill.
- Drain covers over nearby drains if there is a risk of contamination.
- Absorbent pads around leaking machinery.
3. Absorb the Oil

Leave the absorbent in place until the oil has been fully absorbed.
4. Collect the Used Absorbents

- Place them into a suitable disposal bag or container.
- Seal the waste to prevent further leaks.
5. Clean the Surface
After removing the oil:
- Wipe the area with additional absorbent pads if required.
- Use a suitable degreasing cleaner if necessary.
- Ensure the floor is dry before allowing people back into the area.
6. Dispose of the Waste Correctly
Oil-contaminated absorbents should be disposed of according to your local environmental regulations. Do not wash oil into drains or dispose of contaminated materials with general waste unless permitted.
